Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds update 2.0.0 is now available across console and PC platforms, bringing a new one-on-one racing mode, additional customization options and balance changes to SEGA’s kart racer. The update also adds Bayonetta as an unlockable racer and introduces new ways to compete through Rival Duel and online Duel Match.
The update is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Players must install the latest version to access online modes and downloadable content. Season Pass Two is also available, while SEGA has confirmed plans for six premium DLC packs and eight free updates during the game’s second year.
One-on-one races arrive in update 2.0
The headline addition is Duel Mode, which supports one-on-one races both offline and online. The mode introduces the Duel Boost mechanic: its gauge fills over time and when players use items, allowing a speed boost once it is full. The update describes the boost as a way to recover from a disadvantage, giving players another resource to manage during a direct contest.
Offline players can also enter Rival Duel matches against CPU-controlled CrossOver racers. Victories provide unique items, and progression through Rival Duel unlocks Bayonetta as a playable racer. Online players can instead use Duel Match to compete directly against a single opponent.
- Duel Mode: one-on-one races are available offline and online.
- Rival Duel: CPU-controlled CrossOver racers can be challenged offline, with Bayonetta tied to progression in the mode.
- Duel Match: online races are built around a single opponent.
- Duel Boost: the gauge charges over time and through item use before enabling a speed boost.
More customization and revised competitive systems
Update 2.0.0 adds the Super Slot system and a seventh Gadget slot. The extra slot gives players another place to equip Gadgets as they customize their racing setup. The patch also adds 15 new Gadgets, alongside a new Shop, Play Missions and additional World Match options.
Several changes affect the balance of online races. Ring respawns are faster, Acceleration Type Machines recover more effectively, and a number of powerful Gadgets have been adjusted. These changes are accompanied by broader competitive updates intended to alter how players manage items, recovery and equipment during races.
Festivals now use win streaks
Festival events have been extended from three days to 10 days. Their rankings are now determined by win streaks rather than Festival Points, changing the way players’ results are evaluated during the event period.
SEGA also outlined a future limited-time Best-of-10 competition. In that format, players will compete across a limited number of races to earn the most points, with Duel Medals available as participation rewards. The medals can be exchanged for exclusive rewards, according to the update details.
With the update installed, players on the listed console and PC versions can access the new modes, systems and content. The planned second-year schedule indicates that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will continue receiving both paid downloadable content and free updates beyond version 2.0.0.
