Blizzard is expanding Diablo 4’s War Plans endgame system in Season 16 with a new meta‑progression layer called War Plans Tactics and a dedicated reroll currency. The developer published the changes in a blog post ahead of Season 16 arriving on the Diablo 4 public test realm October 27.
What War Plans Tactics changes
The War Plans system, introduced alongside the Lord of Hatred expansion, previously let players build a playlist of endgame activities but offered limited control over which tasks appeared or how often. Season 16 adds an investible tactics tree that grants players more influence.
- Points earned from War Plans activities can be spent in the new tactics tree to increase the chance that preferred activities or specific reward types appear in future War Plans.
- Players may assign up to three points into each endgame activity and up to three points into different reward types, allowing focused tuning of what appears during a War Plan run.
- Certain nodes provide conditional benefits: putting at least one point into Helltides or Nightmare dungeons gives the choice of increased chances for Greater Helltides and Escalation Nightmare dungeons, respectively.
“Earn points from completing War Plans activities, then invest these points into nodes to increase the chance of preferred activities or rewards appearing,” Blizzard said. “This allows you to tailor your War Plans more closely with both your goals and playstyle.”
Rerolls and Marks of Wisdom
Season 16 also changes how players reroll their War Plans. Blizzard is introducing a new currency called Marks of Wisdom, which will cap at 20. The developer said the currency should allow players to reroll more often than under the previous system.
| Feature | Detail (as published) |
|---|---|
| Meta‑progression | War Plans Tactics skill tree; invest points earned from activities |
| Point assignment | Up to 3 points per activity and up to 3 points per reward type |
| Reroll currency | Marks of Wisdom, capped at 20 |
| PTR rollout | Arriving on the Diablo 4 public test realm October 27 |
The blog post describes reward-side options in the tactics tree that let players bias their runs toward specific item types. Blizzard listed a wide range of reward categories that players can favour, including armor, weapons, jewelry, Obducite, salvage, gems, gold, activity keys, Horadric Cube materials, and Talisman items.
What this means for players
Taken together, the tactics tree and Marks of Wisdom aim to reduce the frustration players reported when War Plans forced unwanted activities or when rerolls were too scarce. By investing earned points and using Marks of Wisdom, players will be able to shape War Plans to better match their goals — whether chasing specific activity types such as Nightmare dungeons or prioritizing certain reward categories.
The changes are available for testing on the public test realm beginning October 27, per Blizzard’s announcement. The studio published the details in its Season 16 preview blog post.
