Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge – How To Breed Rare Frogs

Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge, is a new cozy game that lets you raise frogs in a charming wetland reserve. Made by Humble Reeds and published by Armor Games (known for Bear and Breakfast), it adds an eco-friendly twist by asking you to improve biodiversity alongside collecting and decorating. Despite its simplicity, the adorable visuals and relaxing gameplay make Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge a delightful experience.

Embark on a project to revitalize the surrounding wetlands and create a diverse ecosystem for all sorts of wetland creatures. Place furniture for the area’s amphibian friends while keeping an eye out on your bioscore – a meter that tracks how self-sufficient and balanced the local area is. There are over 500 frogs to be found in Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge, and they range from different colours to pattern combinations. Each frog has a taste for specific insects, and their appearance depends on the environment you create. Most are dependent on the type of bug species in the area, as well as the type of objects that you’ve used to decorate.

If you’d like to complete your Frogedex one of the best ways to find all the Rare frogs is to breed them yourself. In this guide, we’ll delve into everything you need to know about breeding in Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge. From creating the perfect habitat to mastering the genetics game.

How To Breed Frogs

To begin breeding frogs you’ll need to unlock the lab in Kamaeru. Do this by completing the first few tutorial quests for Anabelle to arrive and unlock the lab. You’ll then be able to choose to breed frogs to hopefully get the desired colour and pattern that you’re looking for. The breeding minigame is pretty straightforward:

  1. Choose the two parent frogs that you’d like to breed, based on their pattern and colour
  2. Engage in a breeding minigame that is similar to tic-tac-toe.
  3. Place the gene that you’d like down and then “nature” will randomly select a gene to pass on. Your baby frog will have the genes that manage to make it in a line of three. Just like tic-tac-toe.
  4. Up to three traits can be guaranteed in the minigame.
  5. After the game concludes, any empty slots will randomly fill, and the offspring will auto-generate.
  6. If the baby frog is a variation that you don’t already have, you’ll have to tame it with bugs like a wild frog.

Do note that breeding frogs will require money as well as the necessary bugs needed for taming a frog. The rarer a frog, the more money and rare bugs that it’ll require, so make sure you’re stocked up before breeding.

Breed Rare Frogs

To acquire rare frogs for your Frogdex, you’ll need to spruce up your Refuge with new furniture, as well as ponds and plants. This will allow more of the rarer bugs and frogs to begin spawning in your refuge. However, if you’re having trouble attracting a specific pattern you may want to start breeding for the ones that you’re missing. Do note that breeding rarer frogs will cost you more coins, so make sure you have a bit of money to spend before this.

Additionally, some colours can only be obtained through breeding for specific traits. More specifically these variations:

  • Cookie – Peach + Banana
  • Blush – Pink + Kiwi

In order to improve your odds of breeding rare frogs, select the parent frog with your desired mixing colours on both pattern sets. This increases the odds of obtaining your desired colour and pattern as you can roll twice for the genes in the minigame.

If you’re trying to breed a rarer frog and only have one of them befriended, you can breed the rare frog with another species of frog that has the colouration you’d like and try your best to get the breed you want. If you play for a frog’s species before its colour, you stand a better chance at getting the species you need. This also counts when breeding the Blush and Cookie frogs, use them to mix with other variations to obtain the different looks across each type.
