Stardew Valley – Everything To Know About The Desert Festival

Stardew Valley‘s v1.6 patch came out recently and with it a bunch of fun updates and content including the Desert Festival. This brand-new three-day Spring festival is similar to the Night Market festival that happens in Winter but with several more challenges and vendors. It will happen every year in Spring in the Desert from the 15th to the 17th. However because access to the Desert is required to attend the Festival, it’s likely that you won’t have access to this in your first year.

In this guide, we’ll go through everything you need to know about Stardew Valley‘s Desert Festival, including its special currency, items, activities and more.

The Desert Festival

Dates: Spring 15, 16, 17
Location: The Desert
Time: 10 AM – 2 AM

The Desert Festival happens every year in the Desert on Spring 15th, 16th, and 17th and is an organised market focused on selling unique goods. Like the Night Market, you’ll have access to the Traveling Cart that appears to sell the standard randomized item pool. As well as the Shrouded Figure who will send you home to your warp statue for 250g. The Desert Trader is also present and accessible but Sandy’s shop is not available, as she is helping Emily and enjoying the festival, however, you can still enter the Oasis.

Unlike non-festival days, players may enter the Desert prior to when Pam arrives at the Bus Stop, though it officially starts at 10 am. On the final day of the festival, the player must wait until Pam arrives to drive the bus at 10 am. This event requires access to the Calico Desert and therefore the Bus needs to be repaired in order to visit the festival.

Before you fix the bus the Desert Festival will appear on the Spring calendar as a set of greyed-out stars on days 15, 16, and 17.

How To Fix The Bus

The Calico Desert aka The Desert is located to the far Northwest of Pelican Town. You won’t be able to travel there by foot and will need access to a Bus. This will require you to help to repair the Bus.

There are two main ways to repair the bus:

  • On the Community Center path, you must buy all the Vault Bundles (a total cost of 42,500g).
  • On the JojaMart path, you must pay 40,000g on the Joja Community Development Form.

Once you do that in Spring you’ll be able to participate in the Desert Festival.

Desert Festival: Currency – Calico Eggs

There’s a special currency that you can earn during the Desert Festival called Calico Eggs. You’ll be able to earn them by participating in the various activities at the Festival which we’ll go through later. And you’ll be able to spend it at a Store on the grounds that will only accept the Calico Eggs.

There’s a helpful counter in the upper-left corner while you’re in Calico Desert, to count your eggs. Do note that these eggs are an inventory item that takes up a slot and persists after you leave. At the end of the festival, you can put the remainder into a storage chest to take out next time the Desert Festival comes around.

Desert Festival: Activities

These are some of the various activities at the Desert Festival where you can win Calico Eggs.

The Great Desert Race

Head to the east side of the map and go south from the road (or head northeast of the warp point) to find the starting line of the Great Desert Race. The man sitting on the carpet is the Race Announcer, and the course next to him covers half the Calico Desert. Each day from 10 am to 10 pm, three colourful animals race along the course to find out who’s the fastest.

Between each race, you’re able to place bets on which critter will win. This bet costs nothing, but if you win you get 20 Calico Eggs. Just be sure to collect your winnings before the next race begins. This is repeatable, whether you win or lose, until around 11 PM when the final race for the day ends. As of now, this appears to be a game of chance and we can’t tell whether either animal has any better chance of winning.

If you don’t like to play the odds you can also cheat the race by giving the Suspicious Man next to the Oasis a Calico Egg in exchange for one of the race contestants losing. This doesn’t guarantee that your racer will win, but it’ll boost your chances of success from 33% to 50%.

Skull Cavern Challenges

Gil and Marlon of the Adventurer’s Guild will offer one-day Quests that will award you Calico Eggs if completed. To start a daily challenge, speak to Marlon in the booth by the Skull Cavern entrance. Pick one of two randomly generated challenges each day. These quests can range from slaying a number of monsters to exploring a certain level of the Skull Cavern. Each challenge also lists how many Calico Eggs you get for completing it. You’ll get your reward the moment you complete the challenge, so you don’t have to return to Marlon.

If you have the key that unlocks the Skull Cavern door (found on the lowest floor of the Mines), you can also go into the Cavern to mine Calico Eggs. Each Calico Egg mining node will yield you 1-3 eggs. And the number of Eggs you can obtain will increase the further down into the Cavern you go.

Willy’s Fishing Challenge

Next to the oasis behind the chef is Willy, who will offer a special challenge every day of the Desert Festival where you can earn Calico Eggs. These challenges seem to be the same no matter which year you visit:

  • Day 1: Catch three Sandfish
  • Day 2: Catch one Scorpion Carp
  • Day 3: Find Willy’s Golden Bobber

To get the Golden Bobber, you’ll need to catch a treasure chest as you’re reeling in a fish. The first chest you open in Calico Desert on day three of the festival will contain the unique Golden Bobber item, and you’ll need to actively give it to Willy to complete the day’s challenge. As for the fishing challenges, you get to keep the fish you catch, and you can do whatever you want with them.

The Scholar’s Quiz

Head to the northeast corner of Calico Desert to find the Scholar. He’ll give you a series of four questions and if you get them right you’ll earn yourself some Calico Eggs. You can take on the challenge of the Scholar’s quiz once each day, and the questions cover aspects of the game Stardew Valley. They include topics like “How many days are there in a season?” and “How many steps have you taken?”/ If you answer every question correctly, you get 50 Calico Eggs as your prize. However, if you miss even one question, you’ll have to come back the next day to try again.

questions, the player must wait until next year to receive another reward. Questions are randomized from the table per event. Click below to see possible questions and their answers.

Chef

The Chef at The Desert Festival is giving out free food! All you have to choose is what ingredients you’d like to use to make your meal and he’ll get it ready for you. The effect of each meal will depend on the ingredients chosen and after eating your meal any effects will be applied immediately, lasting for variable durations.

Emily’s Makeover Box

Head south towards the Oasis shop to spot Emily and Sandy by a giant cardboard box. Emily is raring to give you a whole new look, and all you have to do to get it is walk into the cardboard box. Emily will go in after you as Sandy guards the door, and when you walk out you’ll have a completely new outfit. This outfit is mostly random but color-coordinated. Any clothing you had on before will go into your inventory, and if you don’t have two or three empty slots for them, the game will refuse to let you enter the box.

The clothing Emily chooses for you includes common hats, shirts, and pants you can craft on your own, never unique or hard-to-get items. However, these items are yours forever, and you can keep, wear, dye, or dispose of them as you like. The only downside is that Emily will only perform one outfit makeover per day.

Desert Festival: Shops

Cactus Salesman

Once per festival, the player may obtain a cactus decor item from the Cactus Salesman at the bottom of the map. This decor is one out of several, and its face, colours, and design vary.
