Sea of Stars is the long-awaited retro JRPG game that turn-based action fans have been waiting for. If you’re a fan of Chrono Trigger and other classic SNES games, then it’s likely that this game has been on your radar for a while. Just like most other games in this genre, the game will centre on a group of friends who are on a quest to save the world. In this case, it is Zale and Valere who harness the power of the sun and moon, respectively. Along the way, they’ll be gathering a couple more team members on their journey. Note that this will be a spoiler-free review so IYKYK.

Each character that you’ll have to play in Sea of Stars has set paths and/or things they’re good at. For example, Valere is more of a Battle Monk character and trades high attacks for low defence. So you’ll want to align her stats and bonus stats more towards her Physical Attack and MP later.

In this Sea of Stars guide we’ll go through all the characters you’ll be recruiting in in the game, their skills stats and combos with everyone else.

     

Valere

Valere is one of the starting characters in Sea of Stars. She is a Child of the Solstice, born during the Winter Solstice and thus gifted with lunar magic. She walks the path of the Guardian Goddess Luana. Trained in the martial ways of the monk she can absorb Eclipse Orbs in her moonstaff to dish out massive damage. The Elder Mist sees great potential in her, believing she might one day be the one to “create paths on water”.

Prioritise Stats: MP (for Disorient) and Physical Attack

Zale

Zale is one of the starting characters in Sea of Stars. She is a Child of the Solstice, born during the Summer Solstice and thus gifted with solar magic. He walks the path of the  Guardian God Solen. Trained in the ways of the blade-dancer he can absorb Eclipse Orbs whenever his attacks need an extra kick. The Elder Mist foretold that, in order to find his light and achieve his full potential, he will first need to “stare at the night inside of him.”

Prioritise Stats: MP (for Sunball) and Magic (to power up healing) in the early game. Later on, you’ll be able to specialise Zale in whatever you want since he’s a fairly balanced character.

Garl

Garl is best friends with Valere and Zale even though he is a regular kid devoid of any special powers. Along with his training as a cook, his innately strong constitution makes him a capable defensive fighter, giving him the tools to support his two best friends in their Solstice Warrior duties.

His Warrior Cooking skills play a great support role and he’s able to heal the party well. The Elder Mist hesitantly approves of him and requires that he remember his own limitations when it comes to combat. It is written in the stars that his heart just might be warm enough to “soothe a long tormented soul.”

Seraï

Serai is unlocked after reaching the Cursed Woods and the town of Lucent. She’s a portal assassin and deals toxic damage to enemies.

Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars by Sabotage Studio is a turn-based RPG inspired by the classics. It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

The game is out now on the PlayStation 5|4, Xbox, PC – Steam.
