Scorched Sweep I – III
Requirements: Blades of Chaos Lvl 4 for Scorched Sweep III.
Scorched Sweep I will already be unlocked for you at the beginning of God of War Ragnarok. By pressing R1 during Flame Whiplash slash enemies and apply moderate Burn. If Flame Whiplash is fully charged, create a wave of fire from where the ground was struck.
Even without upgrading this move has a nice horizontal range, and it is a decent way of dealing with a number of enemies surrounding you. The real magic however comes when you reach Scorched Sweep III when the move gets upgraded with a wave of fire that hits multiple times and will carry enemies a shocking distance.
The wave will pick up other enemies as it goes, bunching them together. At Level III the Scorched Sweep becomes one of the absolute best crowd management attacks in the game.
Scorched Earth I-III
Requirements: 750 xp for Scorched Earth I | 1000 xp Scorched Earth II | Blades of Chaos Lvl 4 for Scorched Earth III.
Scorched Earth is similar to Scorched Sweep and it’s on this list not because one is better than the other, but because you should be using both simultaneously for the ultimate crowd control. Press R2 during Flame Whiplash to spike the Blade down and create a heavy Burn explosion. If Flame Whiplash is fully charged, trigger a hazard of smaller follow-up explosions.
The next upgrades of Scorched Earth will significantly increase the size and power of this attack. It’s great for crowd control especially paired with Scorched Sweep which will group them together. Then hit them with that Scorched Earth.
Immolation & Furious Immolation

Requirements: 500 xp for Immolation
Both these skills will help you build up that Burn effect. With Immolation when you perform Melee Attacks in quick succession without sustaining damage, you will power up the Blades of Chaos and inflict Burn damage on every hit. Bonus to LUCK and RUNIC while active.
Then when you upgrade it to Furious Immolation, when you build up that Immolation metre, press (L1) and (Triangle). This will enhance all of the Blades of Chaos Melee Attacks with Burning explosions that build additional Rage for a duration.
The Blades of Chaos are excellent at hitting multiple times, so it’ll be easy to build up that meter quickly. For that reason alone, the Immolation skills are absolutely invaluable for the Blades of Chaos. Also, feel free to cash that Burn effect in for the extra damage often, it’ll build back up quickly.
RANGED SKILLS
Ranged increases the damage done by Blades of Chaos range attacks.
Hyperion Grapple I-II
Requirements: 750 xp
The Hyperion Grapple helps get Guaranteed Stun Damage on enemies, which you can finish with your R3. After impaling an enemy with Hyperion Pull, Hold (R1) to launch forward towards grounded enemies to cause an impact with high Stun. Airborne enemies are instead slammed into the ground.
While the Leviathan Axe has the benefit of being able to be thrown at enemies, the Blades of Chaos do not have the same luxury. However, because of Hyperion Grapple, they are still quite capable of delivering substantial amounts of stun. In fact, the Hyperion Grapple is probably the best way of dealing stun.
On most opponents, you can chain the Hyperion Grapple into itself. Leading to, essentially, a guaranteed stun. Once you unlock the Hyperion Grapple II, you are also provided with a fireball effect that burns enemies behind the foe you are striking.
You need Hyperion Grapple I in order to unlock II.
Blazing Explosion I-II

Requirements: 750 xp
After impaling an enemy with Hyperion Pull, Hold (R1) to launch forward towards grounded enemies to cause an impact with high Stun. Essentially making the enemy into a little bomb. Airborne enemies are instead slammed into the ground.
By Blazing Explosion II your homemade enemy bomb explosion is now quite a bit bigger. If you tag the closest opponent in a group with this one, all their friends will be launched by the resulting explosion. And you can do it to a grounded opponent too. Better yet, you can grab opponents in midair and detonate them. Another excellent way to control crowds.
Melee SKILLS
Melee adds more powerful melee attacks.
Spinning Chaos

Requirements: 750 xp
Pull out the Leviathan Axe when there’s a boss but for multiple smaller enemies, the Blades of Chaos have your back. Activate Spinning Chaos by evading and then holding (L) forward and pressing (R1) to perform a leaping cyclone attack. This move is effective at knocking falling enemies back into the air and is a great way to close the gap on faraway enemies safely.
Evasive Embers
Requirements: 750 xp
When you’re playing God of War Ragnarok, avoiding taking damage is a critical part of gameplay in this game. With Evasive Embers, you can avoid hits while also doing damage while dodging backwards. You can use this skill to create space while surrounded and continue hitting them with your long-range combos. It is the best skill to use when you’re in a pinch.
While evading, Hold (L) back and Press (R1) to send out a burst of sparks that apply Burn to a large area in front. Deals increased damage to enemies right in front of Kratos. Evasive Embers is a cheap and early unlock.
While evading, Hold (L) back and Press (R1) to send out a burst of sparks that apply Burn to a large area in front. Deals increased damage to enemies right in front of Kratos.
Plume of Chaos
Requirements: Blades of Chaos Lvl 4
The Plume of Chaos is one of the last skills you’ll unlock for your Blades of Chaos. It is a Heavy Attack Finisher at the end of the Light Attack Combo. Press (R1), (R1), (R1), (R1), (R1), (R2) to perform. It deals massive Burn damage and will launch enemies.
As is typically the case for your Blades, this attack is fantastic for hitting large swathes of enemies. It isn’t just about crowd control, either; it also does a considerable amount of damage. Once you unlock it, it is almost always going to be worth using to finish off your combos.
