Resident Evil has been on a viral rampage recently given the massive success of their remasters and of course Resident Evil: Village. Which comes complete with memes of Tall Vampire Lady and Winter Hands. On the back of all this good publicity comes Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, an animated series coming to Netflix on July 8th.
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is produced and supervised by Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who is responsible for bringing numerous titles in the Resident Evil series into existence, namely the three undying video-game classics: Resident Evil (original and remake), Resident Evil 2 (original) and Resident Evil 4. Kobayashi also produced all three Resident Evil animated films: Degeneration, Damnation, and Vendetta.
The series starts in the year 2000 in the fictional country of Penamstan where a civil war is brewing. The U.S Army Mad Dogs is sent in to assist only to find an army of undead waiting for them. Cut to the year 2006 and this is where Infinite Darkness really begins.
America is still reeling from what happened in Racoon City in 1998 and there is a concerted effort by the government to try to maintain control and show strength. A hacking incident occurs at the White House and who but Leon S. Kennedy, now President Graham’s best buddy after he had saved the daughter Ashley in Resident Evil 4. As well as Jason “The Hero of Penamstan” (and one of the Mad Dogs earlier) is sent to investigate. What skills do these individuals have to investigate a hacking incident? No idea but luckily these guys were sent in and not some cybersecurity nerds because they would be needed to take down a horde of mysterious zombies alongside a SWAT team!
So what is this mysterious file that was being hacked in the White House? Apparently, it’s related to some sort of biological lab in Shanghai. So Leon, Jason and the team decide to go investigate by boarding a cutting-edge submarine. They are then attacked by a swarm of rat-like Bio Organic Weapons (B.O.W) which push them into a life or death situation.
What About Claire?
Meanwhile, in Penamstan, Claire Redfield who has been on the ground to provide support for refugees gets given an unsettling drawing from a nonverbal boy. This image freaks her out and she decides to investigate this further. Which leads her to find out about some horrible experiments that were being conducted during the Penamstan Civil War. Based on the trailer, Claire and Leon eventually meet and together they will both find out what has really been going on.
My guess is that it’s more viruses and more biological weapons. Stay tuned!
Where Does Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness Fit In The Game Universe?
Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is set a few years after Resident Evil 4. Following the end where Leon travelled to Spain to save the US president’s daughter. He’s then recruited by the president and became one of his special agents. That was in 2004 and Infinite Darkness takes place later, in 2006.
During the April 2021 Resident Evil Showcase stream, Capcom revealed that Infinite Darkness will be set directly in the White House. With the president being none other than Ashley Graham’s father.
For Claire Redfield, her story takes place between Resident Evil: Code Veronica which took place in 1998 and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 which takes place in 2011.
Studio and Talent
Quebico is the animation studio for this movie and they were also the studio behind Resident Evil: Vendetta. Bronwen Hughes of The Walking Dead fame is directing the series and Andrew Dabb (Supernatural) is writing the scripts.
The main voice talent for the series is Nick Apostolides as Leon Kennedy. Stephanie Panisello as Claire Redfield and Ray Chase as Jason. You’ll know Nick and Stephanie as the voices of Leon and Claire from the rebooted Resident Evil 2. While Ray Chase is Noctis Lucius Caellum from Final Fantasy XV.
