Animal Crossing: New Horizons – How To Upgrade Nook’s Cranny
If anyone says they’re done with everything to do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons well first they’re lying and second there’s a bunch of new updates coming your way. For the full list check out all the features both announced and datamined here. Now with most of us hitting the 30+ day mark of playing, (or for some of us that have been time travelling), we’ve now unlocked the ability to upgrade Nook’s Cranny shop for a second time! This new Nook’s Cranny will be bigger and sell a greater variety of items not available in the previous store. On top of that better tools, wallpaper and flooring will become available. As well as a new timer tool that can be used with your friends.
The First Upgrade

So first it goes without saying that you have to get Tom Nook’s nephews out of that small green tent and into their own shop first. Timmy and Tommy get some walls around them when you pay off your first initial tent loan using 5,000 Nook Miles. The next day Timmy & Tommy will ask you to help them build their store. To do this all you need to do is bring them 30 Wood, 30 Softwood, 30 Hardwood, and 30 Iron Nuggets. Easy peasy. Especially once you realise that you can hit rocks more than once. Urgh that took a while for me to realise.
Once you have the required resources Timmy & Tommy will begin construction on the first Nook’s Cranny. Now on to the next stage!
Second Upgrade Requirements
So unlike the first upgrade this second one is likely to take you some more time. Probably more than a month of continous play. There are three requirements for you to upgrade and expand Nook’s Cranny.
Play For 30 Days After Nook’s Cranny Is Built

Playing for 30 days after Nook’s Cranny has been built isn’t that hard. But for most of you, you may not have reached that threshold yet. If you assume within the first week of playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons you expanded the Nook’s Cranny store. Then just add 30 days from that and you’ll likely hit the expansion unlock criteria around then. You can check your days played on your Nook Phone app to make sure.
Buy & Sell At Least 200,000 Bells Of Goods

Within a month of spending and selling items at Nook’s Cranny, you should probably have hit your 200,000 bell mark. Even if you’re thrifty and don’t spend a lot of bells on their items you’re most likely going to be selling them stuff that you’ve caught or crafted. Selling things such as fish, bugs or furniture all contribute to the 200,000 bell counter. If you want to be extra certain you reach this though, be sure to buy all of the furniture items in stock at Nook’s Cranny every day. We recommend doing this anyway to help fill up your Nook Shopping catalogue. This is helpful for Nook Miles achievements and having a variety of items to re-order.
Have Mabel Visit Your Island

I think this is a bit of a cheat requirement because Mabel will probably visit your island within the first two weeks. And if you missed her you’ll definitely catch her sometime during the 30 days. She’s standing right outside REsident Services and is hard to miss. Most of you would’ve built the Able Sisters shop already too by that time. Just to be certain though remember to speak to Mabel at least once to make sure this requirement is fulfilled. Heck just speak to her anytime she’s on your island, what have you to lose?
The Expansion

After you’ve reached all three requirements listed above for the upgraded Nook’s Cranny. An announcement will be made by Isabelle in the morning letting you know that the shop will be closed the next day. During this time you won’t be able to buy or sell anything at Nook’s Cranny until it opens fully expanded the day after. If you need to just visit one of your friends and use their shop in the meantime.

Upgrading book’s cranny a second time isn’t a part of the new update. You had to have play for 28 days and spend 75,000 bells to trigger it, and I upgraded it my second real day of playing (no update) by time traveling. Maybe the new update increased the amount of bells you need to spend but the shop upgrade was always there.
Hi Nana, thanks for writing in. Sorry for the error in that statement I guess time travelling has some benefits into seeing the future. It’s all changed now!
I was wondering if anybody could help me out.. I’ve met all the criteria for getting my nooks cranny upgrade but it has yet to be done. Anybody know what else I can do?
Are you sure you met all the requirements? Remember that it’s 30 days after you upgraded Nook’s Cranny for the first time. So if you upgraded it about 3 or 5 days from when you first started playing then it’ll upgrade 35 days from when you first started.
