Ubisoft Acquires Blue Mammoth Games And 1492 Studio

Ubisoft has had a busy week bolstering its already considerable portfolio with the acquisition of Brawlhalla developers Blue Mammoth Games and mobile game developer of the Is It Love? series 1492 Studio.

Headquartered in the South of France in Montpellier, Is It Love? is one of the top five grossing simulation games for iOS in France, but only in the top 20 for the U.S. Ubisoft did not specify how much the acquisition was for, but it gives the publisher another asset in the lucrative mobile market. “This deal is in keeping with our strategy of reaching new audiences through smart, targeted, and highly profitable acquisitions,” said Jean-Michel Detoc, executive director of Ubisoft Mobile.

Blue Mammoth Games is based near Atlanta, Georgia, and is comprised of 21 talented team members, including founders Matthew Woomer and Lincoln Hamilton, who have a strong massive multiplayer online background. The studio developed and published Brawlhalla, a free-to-play online brawler that is currently the most-played fighting games on Steam and among the top free-to-play games on PS4.

“We’re looking forward to leveraging Ubisoft‘s expertise and resources to continue developing and supporting Brawlhalla for the long term, and to benefiting from their help in bringing the game to new players,” said the Blue Mammoth Games founders. This acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to Ubisoft‘s earnings.

Brawlhalla seems a good addition to Ubisoft‘s portfolio. The Smash Bros. style game continues to make its way into the world of eSports, partnering up with Dreamhack for its third year of competitive events with the Brawlhalla World Championship.
