The Most Anticipated Games of 2018

The year has only just begun but there’s already plenty of new video games to look forward to, from Red Dead Redemption II to God Of War.

2017 was one of the best years ever for video games, which means that 2018 has a very hard act to follow. And at the moment it’s very difficult to tell whether it’s up to the job. There’s far less concrete information about this year’s line-up than is usual at this point in time, and a lot of games that we might assume to be out this year might end up being released next year. It’s also relatively hard to know what to expect from E3, or what Nintendo might be planning to unveil over the course of the year. So this is what we’re anticipating so far for 2018!

Monster Hunter: World by Capcom

Monster Hunter: World introduces a living, breathing ecosystem in which players take on the role of a hunter that seeks and slays ferocious beasts in heart-pounding battles that unfold across the vast ever-changing terrain. Retaining the series’ skill-based progression and robust crafting system, players gear up to venture on quests to seek and slay monsters, progressively improving their skills to become the ultimate hunter. Loot collected from fallen foes can be used to create new equipment and armor upgrades styled after the monsters they’ve slain, allowing hunters to survive the elements and defeat the tougher opponents that await them.

A Way Out by Hazelight Studios, EA

A Way Out is a co-op only game uniquely tailored for two players to work together no matter the situation. Through a compelling narrative, Leo and Vincent will embark on an emotional adventure, where they will live some memorable action moments that they will face together including car chases, stealth passages, melee fights, shootouts and many more. We’ve played co-op games for years, but few have ever taken advantage of the concept from a presentation and storytelling standpoint quite the way that A Way Out does. The game’s split-screen style allows for both players to always influence the events of the story even when one is watching a cutscene or is otherwise indisposed. It’s a remarkably fresh take on the co-op concept that may prove to be the shot in the arm the cinematic action genre desperately needs.

Red Dead Redemption 2 by Rockstar Games

Red Dead Redemption was, as you may well know, a game from 2010 that became one of the crowning achievements of that console generation. God of War by Santa Monica Studio

From Creative Director Cory Barlog comes a new beginning for one of gaming’s most recognizable icons in the epic PlayStation 4 entry in the God of War franchise. Living as a man outside the shadow of the gods, Kratos must adapt to unfamiliar lands, unexpected threats, and a second chance at being a father. Together with his son Atreus, the pair will venture into the brutal Norse wilds and fight to fulfill a deeply personal quest.

His vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years behind him, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. It is in this harsh, unforgiving world that he must fight to survive, and teach his son to do the same. This startling reimagining of God of War deconstructs the core elements that defined the series — satisfying combat breathtaking scale and a powerful narrative — and fuses them anew. With an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before, fights in God of War mirror the pantheon of Norse creatures Kratos will face: grand, gritty, and grueling. Detroit: Become Human is a neo-noir sci-fi thriller that tells the story of a group of androids who are trying to rebel against an abusive society and the people assigned to hunting them down. Fe by Zoink!, EA

We last saw Fe at E3 2016. Launching as part of EA Originals, the game’s unique muted palette and unique aesthetic is a flawless masterpiece. By Swedish developers, Zoink Games is classified as a “personal narrative about our relationship with nature, the land, and its beings.” Fe is a symbolic personal fantasy that brings to mind powerful games like Journey and Shadow of the Colossus. It stars a fox-like creature who seeks to protect the forest by enlisting animal allies through audible calls.

At its heart, Fe is a personal narrative about our relationship with nature, the land, and its beings. It’s a wordless celebration of our longing to be one with the world around us. A story that reminds us that everything in this world is connected, living in a delicate balance that is constantly under threat. It’s a game full of discovery, conflict, and relationships.

Anthem by BioWare, EA

Anthem is an open world action role-playing multiplayer shooter developed by BioWare‘s Edmonton studio and published by Electronic Arts. In this futuristic, dystopian alien world, humanity has been isolated behind the protective wall of Fort Tarsis, shielded from the many dangers of the primeval lands beyond. Players act as Freelancers – a group of courageous individuals dedicated to protecting the people of Fort Tarsis from threats outside the wall.

In this shared world, squads of up to four players embark on expeditions outside the wall of Fort Tarsis to discover and encounter the many hidden mysteries and unforeseen dangers that lie beyond. With their powered Javelin exosuits, Freelancers can explore uncharted areas from the air, on the ground and beneath the water, with each suit fulfilling a unique playstyle and combat role. While exploring the outside world, Freelancers may also bear witness to world-changing events such as Shaper Storms, or encounter unanticipated dangers such as savage beasts and ruthless marauders.

BioWare‘s debut of an all-new franchise sets up a strong multiplayer premise with a massive open world. Considering the developer’s history with deep stories and complex characters, we’re hopeful Anthem could be a great, sweeping epic on par with that of the Mass Effect series.

Yoshi by Nintendo

The last Yoshi game released by Nintendo was Yoshi’s Woolly World in Oct. 2015 for the Wii U. Announced during E3, this new title offers a familiar world where our old, adorable pal runs through a series of levels, interacting with items along the way. However, the player’s view can be flipped, to see anything hiding behind objects. Nintendo has yet to announce a final name for the game. There’s not much that we know about the currently untitled Yoshi game except that it will be some adorable egg throwing fun! From the video, we can see that the platformer will be heading along the same art direction vein as Paper Mario. But with a more cardboard feel to it. Nintendo has mentioned that it will be introducing a multiplayer component so you can battle through every world in local co-op (yay).
